Understand Engineers Australia Code of Ethics when preparing CDRs
In preparing competency demonstration reports (CDR) when applying to Engineers Australia for qualification assessment, it will help if you are familiar with ENGINEERS AUSTRALIA – CODE OF ETHICS. Australian employers will expect you be understand and follow the behaviours in the code of ethics, even if you are not a member of Engineers Australia. The code of ethics reflects the expectations of Australian employers and the Australian public.

The members of Engineers Australia are committed to the Cardinal Principles of the Code:
• to respect the inherent dignity of the individual
• to act on the basis of a well informed conscience
• to act in the interest of the community, and
• to uphold its Tenets.
The Tenets of the Engineers Australia Code of Ethics are:
| 1 | members shall place their responsibility for the welfare, health and safety of the community before their responsibility to sectional or private interests, or to other members |
| 2 | members shall act honour, integrity and dignity in order to merit the trust of the community and the profession |
| 3 | members shall act only in areas of their competence and in a careful and diligent manner |
| 4 | members shall act with honesty, good faith and equity without discrimination towards all in the community |
| 5 | members shall apply their skill and knowledge in the interest of their employer or client for whom they shall act with integrity without compromising any other obligation to these Tenets |
| 6 | members shall, where relevant, take reasonable steps to inform themselves, their clients and employers, of the social, environmental, economic and other possible consequences which may arise from their actions |
| 7 | members shall express opinions, make statements or give evidence with fairness and honesty and on the basis of adequate knowledge |
| 8 | members shall continue to develop relevant knowledge, skill and expertise throughout their careers and shall actively assist and encourage those with whom they are associated, to do likewise |
| 9 | members shall not assist in or induce a breach of these Tenets and shall support those who seek to uphold them if called upon or in a position to do so |
When preparing your CDR and when applying for jobs on Australia, you need to be able to demonstrate you understand ethical standards. This is done through your actions. The important word assessors and employers want to hear is “I”. Your CDR will includes many statement similar to “I did it like this.”

Dear Madam,
I have a query regarding the qualification assessment done by the EA. I have completed my Mechanical Engineering (2004) and I have 4 years relavent Experience. I am applying for GMS Visa.
The first company I worked for 2.4 years was dissolved now. I have the experience certificate from them.
I am in a doubtful stage that if I lodge my application for the assessment to the EA, will they consider it or reject it.
Should I write as an attachement to the experience certificate that a particular person shall act as a referal for that period who knew that I was employed with that company.

Harsha – All you can do is tell your story. You have a valid experience certificate. I would make a statement and have it certified by one of the classes of people listed as authorised in Section A of the Migration Skills Assessment booklet. EA will come back to you if they want more information. A statement by anyone else would need to be certified by an authorised person.

I think you need to do a lot of work on your English. You need to have a level of IELTS 6 in all parts. You should be really trying to get to a level of IELTS 7 to increase your chances of getting a job. I have not really undestood your question.
Dear Madam,
I am working with a MNC now and it is really difficult to get an experience letter unless I resign my job. But, I have a valid appointment letter, salary slips and reference letter mentioning my joining date. Will this be enough for me to lodge a valid GSM application? Or, is it mandatory that I should get an experience letter mentioning my job duties?
Ken – Don’t quit your job. You may not get a visa for many months or not at all. Talk to an approved migration agent. You will need a refernce letter for experience included in a career episode report, otherwise an appointment letter should suffice. Look at the requirements for validation of experience, you may be able to have a statement certifed by a Notary.
i am a civil engineer having experience of 2.5 years with sound health and character. Am i capable of migrating to australia or not
? do i need score of 6 in general module or academic for migration purpose.
Umesh – Yes you seem eligible to apply. You need 6 or more in all element of the general IELTS.

i am electrical engineer(B.E) with 5 years experience.i am going to write CDR.my query is that i work and my field experience is in telecom industry.for last 5 years. for first career episode i write my final year project belongs to power electronics;then remaing 2 episode belong to my job i.e telecom. can i make this report which is belong to electrical and remaining 2 belongs to telecom industry.

I already did my bachelors in MECHANICAL ENGINEERING (4 years) in india.Right now am in australia doing my advanced diploma in mechanical engineering….on student visa.But i dont have any previous experience in the related field….My query is that can i apply for assesment of my bachelors .
Surya – Yes. For migration your undergraduate qualifications are assessed.
i want to know some examples for the cardinal principle codes and explanation about it
Sally – Where does all this come from? I do not understand the question. I am an electrical engineer. For me the principal codes are the Australian Wiring Rules and the Australian standards related to electrical equipment and installations. There are also specific Acts and laws related to electrical safety. All engineers should be familiar with the occupational health and safety laws and regulations. Hope that helps.
