Dear ianlittle,
I am at a stage of initial assessment for the subclass 175 as engineering associate (production engineer). Though my occupation lies in new SOL, shall I go for sponsorship instead of applying as independent skilled migrant? How much time will it save?

Shailendra - Regional sponsored visas can be a trap because if you cannot find a job in the region you are not allowed to work in another region. An independant visa will give you greater flexibility.

Hi Ian, I have read the details for sponsorship on http://www.liveinvictoria.vic.gov.au/ (Victoria), But I'm still confused about sponsorship.. There 176 Skilled Visa and 175 as Independent Visa.
Can you please justify which is better and faster. And what are the differences.. like I read in 176 that we have to live in a specified area and we will not be able to get govt. facilities..

Please justify this to clear my confusion.

Regards
- Shailendra

Shailen - It will be impossible for you to get a job from offshore through on-line employment agencies. You will need to apply directly to companies. Go to the LiveionVictoria website abd dowload a copy of the Engineers Guide (wirkbook) from their publications section. You can be sponsored directly by the Victorian government. Follow this link for more details.

Fred - A large number. Perth is the engineering capital for mining and oil and gas engineering in Australia. Go to site such as the Mining Council of Australia and you will see all the majors listed there. An issue you will have is your age.

I an a 55-year old, white South African male with 20+ years experience in procurement and project management. My step-son is in Australia and is commencing with applications for permanent residency. Are there any companies in Western Australia (particularly in the Perth area) who I can approach who are willing to offer sponsored employment (457 type visa)?

Jorie - Look for an accountancy company or any organisation that employs accountants and apply for jobs. You need to have an IELTS of greater than 7 to be able to apply for a general sjilled migrants visa. Go to our FAQ page and follow the links to obtain all the information you need.

Annoop - Sponsorship is the quickest way to gain entry. As mechanical engineering is on the Critical Skills List (CSL) that will take 18 months or more by the time you get your qualifications assessed and then apply for a visa.
