Sponsorship – Get High Priority for Australian Migration
Migrants with a sponsor get priority when applying for a general skilled migrant visa to Australia. You can be sponsored by States or companies. Save time, reduce worry and reduce the cost of migration by finding a sponsor.
See the priority for visa application assessment and details on the various Australian DIAC lists from the tribus lingua Migration Information blog
Project Australia provides a wide range of ways you can find an employer to sponsor your migration. Employer sponsorship has two great things going for it:
- it gives you priority in the visa process
- it gives you a job when you arrive in Australia
Sponsorship is worth a lot of money to you. It is not easy to make happen but is well worth having a crack at. (translation = it is not easy to achieve, but it is so valuable you should try very hard to get an Australian sponsor)
An obvious source for a company sponsor is to get a job with one of the many Australian owned international engineering or construction companies
State and Regional Sponsorship
Each State and Territory and some of the regions have sponsorship schemes. Here are a list of some of the links to the sites to provide additional information.

Get yourself a sponsor. Sponsorship reduces the waiting and takes a large part of the uncertanty out of migration. It removes the greatest financial risk of migrating to Australia, landing a job after arrival. Search the State and Territory sites for their schemes and /or look for a company sponsor.
Go to the top of the migration waiting list – find an Australian sponsor.

Kudzai – The simple answer is to find someone who will employ you. Finding that some one is more difficult. Step one is to get your English up to the required level. I am not an expert on the medical field but there is probably additional occupational English requirements for your occupation. The next step is to get your qualifications accredited in Australia. Depending on where you trained you may need to do additional training. You need to go to the Australian Skills Recognition Information website (ASRI). Go to our FAQ page and you will find links to all the websites to obtain the information you need. To find potential employer, go to the Australian Physiotherapy Association site. Follow the links from the industry association memberships. Company and organisation members are all potential employers. If you are prepared to live away from a major city you should be able to obatin government sponsorship if you qualifications are accredited.
I have done Bachelors in Electronic Engineering. I have around 1.5 years of experience. 7 months of my experience belong to Network communication as an apprentice and last 11 months belong to electrical equipment manufacturer. I was just able to see that Electrical and Electronics engineering are separate occupations. My most of the experience is in the Electrical Engineering defined tasks but I am electronics engineer! Here in my country, an Electronics Engineer can work in Computer, Radio and Electrical Field. Can you state which occupation should I choose, whether electronics or electrical???
I will be waiting for your reply.
Regards
Haris – You look to me like a communications engineer, which comes under electroniics engineer in the ASCO code system.
Thanks for reply.
I agree with you that it is communication engineering for the apprentice of 7 months, but what about the last 11 months that I have spent in the electrical equipment manufacturer? I don’t think that it is under the communication category rather fits in electrical! I am unsure about this and it is not letting me apply.
One more thing, I just passed the IELTS Academic with 8.5, 8.5, 7, 6.5 for an overall of 7.5. I know Academic IELTS is difficult than General IELTS and I don’t have to take IELTS General again but how much points will my Academic IELTS give me, 15 or 25? I have one 6.5 band which considerably is lower than 7 but critically better than 6.5 that would have been obtained in General. Can you help me here as well ???
Regards
Haris – You need to separate the qualifications assessment from the application for a visa. They are totally separate exercises carried out by deiiferent organisations. The common link is the ASCO occupation you nominate. for qualifications assessment all you have to do is demonstrate the engineering conpetencies for your nominated occupation. You should have enough experience in communications engineering to do that. To get additional points in the points test you ned recent relevant experience in your nominated occupation. You should talk this through with a migration agent. We are not allowed to advise on visa matters. Read the Booklet 6 on General Skilled Migration carefully. Check whether it specifies a scor eof 7 or more in all categories.
I have done bachelors in computer science and i possess MCSE certification since 2002 and have around 8.5 years of experience, my main work area is Network (LAN/ WAN). please tell me that if i can apply or not if yes so on what field and i if i want to assess only my vendor qualification, how i can do this ? please advise…
Cheers
Marcia – It looks like you could, but would have a long wait. Go to the Australian Computer society site and read their guidelines. Follow the links from our FAQ page. Also have a look at the Critical Skills List and the priorities for immigration page.
I may have missed out on your answers, i will like to know if an IELTS scores of 8.0 – listening, 7.5 – speaking, 7.5 – Reading and 6.5 in writing can get me a positive assessment from Engineers Australia and what impact will it have if i use the score to apply for migration if i get a positive assessment.
Eze – With a score of 6 or more in all categories your CDR will be assessed for the engineering competencies. If your qualifications are accredited – this will be for an specified ASCO occupation you have nominated. For a visa application, it is possible to gain extra points in the points test for higher IELTS scores. Read Booklet 6: General Skilled Migration. Follow the links form our FAQ page. For higher levels an average is not good enough. Higher levels are needed in all categories.
I have done bachelors in Telecommunication Engineering. I have over 3 years of experience, working in field of mobile communication(2G/2.5G and 4G technologies). I got my degree from department of electrical engineering. My querry is regarding my eligibility for migration to Australia. Under which catagory does communications lie?
Danish – You will be an electronics engineer.
I have been assessed by ACS and passed the assessment several months ago (bachelors in compt science, international IT certifications and 4years working exp). My main obstacle is the ielts exam. I took the exam several times and got scored 6 overall (but not each band). Badly, there was at least one band socred below than 6 (5.5 or 5) in each ielts Report Form, in Speaking/Writing. Can I combine those Test Report Forms?
I am planning to take Independent Skilled. Could you suggest what visa should I take (ex. Regional Sponsored etc., which no requirement in getting score 6 for each band)?
I am also considering to migrate to New Zealand, to live, work, and improve my english, parallel re-take the ielts exam. Need your advice.
Thanks
Zen – You need to talk to a registered migration agent. I have read somewhere that you can combine the results of different tests as long as they are within a year or so. To get a decent job you need good English. Ideally 7 or better all round. In Project Australia there is a whole chapter on ways to improve your English. It works well for all occupations , not just engineers.
Thanks for your reply.
I agree with you that I could have problems in job if I could not have good English. Previously I think I could follow day-to-day English conversation as long as it is related with my job or technical skills, but actually I forget the social issues or other aspects. As an engineer, I only smart deeply in my technical skill but not smart enough in others. Thats why i failed several times in ielts. Thanks for hear my sharing.
Cheers
I am an Electrical Engineer .how can I get an employer sponsored visa? I am preparing my CDR.I would like to have a job offer before reaching australia. Please let me know how can I have one.
Thanks a lot!!
Rupa – This issue is handled in detail in Project Australia. Project Australia shows you ways to look for potential employers in Australia.
Dear IAN,
I am a BE MEchanical Engineering Graduate, currently working as Senior Engineer process in India. Totally i have 7.6 yrs of experience in Production Engineering,Process Engineering, PPC, Project Management & various Industrial projects.I am in the process of strating my application for Skilled immigrant visa & my profile comes under SOL. So what would you suggest me to do, wether to search for a sponsor & apply or Apply for GSM catagory. If any of the both what would be the normal duration knowing that my profile is matching with SOL.
Thanks & Regards
Annoop – Sponsorship is the quickest way to gain entry. As mechanical engineering is on the Critical Skills List (CSL) that will take 18 months or more by the time you get your qualifications assessed and then apply for a visa.
Hi…i am currently an international student, i have had my bachelor in commerce assessed by the Skills Recognition Unit Training Services, fortunately my studies was comparable to the educational level here in Australia. What should i do next in order to find a company who will sponsor me..Looking forward to hear from you. Thank you…
Jorie – Look for an accountancy company or any organisation that employs accountants and apply for jobs. You need to have an IELTS of greater than 7 to be able to apply for a general sjilled migrants visa. Go to our FAQ page and follow the links to obtain all the information you need.
I an a 55-year old, white South African male with 20+ years experience in procurement and project management. My step-son is in Australia and is commencing with applications for permanent residency. Are there any companies in Western Australia (particularly in the Perth area) who I can approach who are willing to offer sponsored employment (457 type visa)?
Fred – A large number. Perth is the engineering capital for mining and oil and gas engineering in Australia. Go to site such as the Mining Council of Australia and you will see all the majors listed there. An issue you will have is your age.
Ian, I want to get sponsorship from Victoria state. I want to go to Melbourne. But the sponsorship requires job in my hand. And I tried to find job in Seek.com, there almost all jobs requires visa for applying for job. This is like a lock.. how can I get job and try for sponsorship from Victoria state? Please guide me.
Shailen – It will be impossible for you to get a job from offshore through on-line employment agencies. You will need to apply directly to companies. Go to the LiveionVictoria website abd dowload a copy of the Engineers Guide (wirkbook) from their publications section. You can be sponsored directly by the Victorian government. Follow this link for more details.
HI,
After reading the above article i got a confusion.I am an overseas student ,studying masters of engineering and got no experience in my field. Actually my brother is an Australian citizen. So just wondering if i could apply for PR straightway with brother’s sponsorship in the middle of my course.
Regards
Kapil
Kapil – Talk to a migration agent.
Hi Ian, I have read the details for sponsorship on http://www.liveinvictoria.vic.gov.au/ (Victoria), But I’m still confused about sponsorship.. There 176 Skilled Visa and 175 as Independent Visa.
Can you please justify which is better and faster. And what are the differences.. like I read in 176 that we have to live in a specified area and we will not be able to get govt. facilities..
Please justify this to clear my confusion.
Regards
- Shailendra
Shailendra – Regional sponsored visas can be a trap because if you cannot find a job in the region you are not allowed to work in another region. An independant visa will give you greater flexibility.
Thanks Ian
Dear ianlittle,
I am at a stage of initial assessment for the subclass 175 as engineering associate (production engineer). Though my occupation lies in new SOL, shall I go for sponsorship instead of applying as independent skilled migrant? How much time will it save?
Abhijit – Sponsorship will be faster and a more certain approach. It couls ave at least a year or two based on past performance.
