Pat - Thanks for the comments.
Concentrate on developing high skill levels in your discipline. If you are doing road design 12d and similar packages would be useful. knowledge of a 3D package such as Smartplant would be useful. As you have AutoCAD I would not bother with microstation too much. Developing your MS Office skills to a high level will be time well spent. If you front up to a prospective employer and tell them you have a knowledge of a wide range of software packages they will start to wonder if your interest is playing with software or applying software tools to do real engineering.

Hi Ian, I bought the complete Project Australia pack and let me tell you that is state of the art work. It's just incredible.

Well Right now I believe that it will be about 3 months 'till I get my Skilled Migration Visa, accordingly to my agent word.

Nowadays I'm focused in learning to use as much software packages as I can before going to Australia, as I know that it will give me an extra plus in my work applications. So I have been working on Primavera Project Planner the last few months. I know, by searching on work ads, that other usual software packages requiered by employers are 12d, hec-ras, microstation, ETABS and SAP (the structural software, not the accountable), and I'm not familiarised with any of them.

So given that I have not much time left, I would like to ask you what software packages would you advise me to focus on, in order to get the most of the time I have left, and maximise my opportunities.

By the way, I already got my skills recognised as Professional Civil Engineer by IEaust, I'm a expert AutoCAD user, average on MS Office suite and MS Project.

Best regards,

To IanLittle,
I am currently working in Oil& Gas Construction Company in UAE. I have acquired a Permanent Visa, with Family, to Australia and arranged accordingly to reach Australia ( Melbourne ) by the end of Februvary. I have more than 5 years experience in Engineering and I hope to land a Job as a Project Engineer. I would like to know what Preparations I need to make and will it be an advantage to get my CV written by CV writing Proffessionals(Error Free)?.

MP - Stop looking for a job and concentrate on your English. In 5 lines you have shown you probably have a terrible CV and would struggle to put a decent job application together, and would struggle even harder at a job interview. Buy Project Australia and follow the steps. Don' t waste your time looking for jobs on the electronic agency sites or with employment agencies. Find companies who employ people with your skills and apply to them directly. Large companies advertise on their company web sites and/or you can register with them. Tailor your CV for each job application. make quality applications, not large quantities of applications. See Medhi's story.

Eugene - Attend activities run by engineering organisations. A good starting point is the Engineers Australia divisions, colleges and special interest group events. These are advertised on their web site. Most are open to the genral public. In Victoria they have a special interest group for overseas qualified engineers. There are a also a wide range of specialist engineering organisatios such as the IChemE. You will find references to these organisations on the Engineers Australia website.
www.engineersaustralia.org.au

The Australia Broadcasting Commission (the ABC) website provides a wide range of videos and podcasts you can download. Engineers Australia also has a range of podcats available from their technical events

Project Australia - Land that Engineering Job in Australia provides further details and advice on internet searching techniques to find engineering organisations and finding general and technical video and podcasts.

2 ianlittle:
It's very intresting subject. But could You tell how can I "start mixing" about?
Do You know any websites or other sources where overseas engineers will be able to improve their Proffessional and informal language? From your standpoint?
TIA

Sanjay

A couple of points:

It is obvious from this short bit of writing from you that your written English is probably not good enough for you to get, or hold, an engineering job in Australia. You need your English at a level for an IELTS test score of 6 in ALL categories to meet the language level for skilled migration. Without adequate English you will not be able to prepare a decent CV or present well at a job interview..

Starting a communication Dear Sir/Madam is about the most impersonal and impolite way to address an Australian. The only worse way you could address me is to start out with "to whom it may concern" Australian communication is much less formal than what you are used to. To relate to Australians you need to be less formal.

You desperately need to get a copy of Project Australia. Read it, make a clear plan, and follow it.

You qualifications are probably OK for you to apply for migration as a professional engineer or technologist. Go to the Engineers Australia website and obtain the Migration Skills Assessment Handbook.
