I am working in Bahrain as a senior Project engineer – HVAC. I have completed IELTS examination. I scored 6.5. I would like to migrate to Australia. First step I need a job.

  2. ianlittle said on February 23, 2009 at 9:28 am

Peter – As a project engineer you should work a bit harder on a plan. Start here for a lot of good ideas:

    http://www.tribuslingua.com.au/engineers-migrate-australia.php

Read this for a few more:

    http://www.liveinvictoria.vic.gov.au/documents/publications/workbook

The reality is you have to be prepared to take a leap of faith. It is not so simple to get a job lined up from afar, particularly in the current climate.

Get your qualifications recognised by Engineers Australia before you start looking for a job.

  3. Babak said on March 8, 2009 at 10:21 pm

I’m finishing my PhD in Information Systems. My Bachelor is in Industrial Engineering. and roughly I get 135 points. I am going to apply for PR and was wondering how this new regulation may affect my application. I do not have sponsor at the moment.

  4. ianlittle said on March 9, 2009 at 7:59 am

Babak – If your occupation is on the CSL list when you apply for a general skilled visa, your application will receive priority over applications for occupations not on the critical skills list (CSL).
You need to talk with a migration agent. I am not so sure your points count assessment is correct. Work out how your points are as an IT professional and then as a professional engineer; consider qualifications and years of relevant work experience. Read Booklet 6 from DIAC in detail. You cannot be a mix of occupations. As your latest study is in IT, you may have trouble convincing people you are an engineer !

  5. abdul said on March 22, 2009 at 12:57 am

i m Mechanical engr, just started my professional career . i do have the sponsorship in Australia . i had achieved 7 band in ielts . but i don’t have reiteration from my engineering council of my country . how can it effect my cause to migrate Australia.

  6. ianlittle said on March 22, 2009 at 9:38 am

Abdul – It does not hatter that you do not have accreditation in your own country. You will be considered to have a non recognised qualification by Australia. You will need to do a competency demonstration report (CDR) for assessment by Engineers Australia. You have to demonstrate you have the competencies of an Australian 4 year degree engineering course.

The Migration Skills Assessment Handbook provides specific details on assessment requirements, competency demonstration reports (CDRs), and the format and length of the career episode reports (CERs). Read this from cover to cover before you start writing. Download the handbook from the Engineers Australia website : http://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/

I HAVE DONE BACHELOR OF COMMERCE FROM INDIA AND NOW IM LIVING WITH MY HUSBAND IN AUSTRALIA. I HAVE WORKED FOR A BANK IN INDIA FOR 3 YEARS AS A CUSTOMER SERVICE PROFESSIONAL. NOW IM LOOKING FOR A COURSE TO DEVELOP MY CAREER IN IT. PLEASE SUGGEST (LOOKING AT THE SKILLS IN DEMAND)

  8. ianlittle said on April 5, 2009 at 5:14 pm

Neha – You are in a better position than I am to work out what is best for you. You need to look at the critical skills list, ASRI and MODL, and work out occupations you are elegible for by studying the occupation details in the ASCO occupation definitions on the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)website. Accounting type occupations have recently been removed from the MODL due to the large number of finance indudtry people out of work due to the current economic conditions. You need to assess the additional skills you need to get from where you are to an occupation on the MODL. Bear in mind the MODL changes every 6 months. You need to make you own assessment of the best path. I do noty have a crystal ball.

  9. Symon said on April 9, 2009 at 6:24 pm

    Dear concern,
I am working in telecommunication field last 4 years. I have worked for Motorola, Ericsson and now working with Huawei as a BSS engineer which is purely telecom. But my educational back ground is BSC in computer science. So Am I eligible to applying for Australia PR.

  10. ianlittle said on April 9, 2009 at 8:16 pm

Symon – Look at the ASCO occupation description for electronics engineer. You will see that electronics and telecommunications are grouped together. As a telecommunications engineer you should be able to demonstrate the competencies of an electronics engineer if you have been doing engineering work.

I have completed to my bachelor degree which is Industrial Engineering in 2007 and currently I have got 6.5 academic IELTS result.I just wonder my bachelor degree has not been in CSL.However,it is exactly the same as production/plant engineering which is listed in CSL.I just wonder can I apply for immigration to Australia with my 2 years work experience and bachelor degree of IE? Regards..,ATA

  14. ianlittle said on April 26, 2009 at 11:39 am

ATA – Yes, industrial and production engineering fall under the same category. Your CDR will need to emphasise the production engineering elements. Refer to the detailed ASCO definitions from the Australian Burea of Statistics website.

  15. edward said on April 28, 2009 at 5:58 pm

    Hi Ian,

I have a question regarding the assessment done by Engineers Australia. I have a degree in Bsc in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Philippines which i received march 2008. September the same year i took and passed the Local Licensure exam. I worked as an electromagnetic compatibility technician for 5 months but i don’t think this counts as engineering work because all i did was test power supplies per the international standards, there were no debugging and design work involved. Given that i have little or no work experience, what are the chances that I will be given a positive assessment? I already took the ielts academic module and received an overall band score of 8 with no score below 7 in all the subtests. I hope you could shed light to my situation. thanks.

  16. ianlittle said on April 28, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Edward – Recent graduates often do technologist type work.
You should be able to get a career episode from your final year project – two to go. The career episodes are about demonstrating your competencies, not about your job in general. Look for some specific tasks, which you can define as a project, which demonstrates a range of the engineering skills listed in the Migration Skills Assessment Handbook.
I also think you will struggle to get accreditation as a professional engineer – you will also have great difficulty getting a job in Australia with so little experience in the present climate, despite your very good English.
An option may be to apply as an engineering technologist, but this may give you issues with visa points for eligibility.
You could make an application for professional engineering accreditation to Engineers Australia. If they consider you do not meet the professional engineer requirements but meet engineering technologist level they will assess you as a technologist for migration purposes – only one application. When you have more experience you could seek professional engineer accreditation.

I completed B.Sc. Computer Science (3 Years Bachelor Degree) from Bangalore University, Inida. After that, I have been working in a local reputed company for more than 4 years in its IT Department. My current designation is Asst. System Administrator. Now, I want to apply Skilled Migration to Australia. But I am worried that shall Australia accept 3 Years B.Sc. Computer Science from Bangalore University for applying Skilled Migration. I hope that you will give me clear idea about my query. — Thanks and regards—– mzpvz

  18. ianlittle said on May 9, 2009 at 10:57 pm

mzpvz – Go to our FAQ page and follow the links to the Australian Computer Society website. Read their Skills Assessment Guidelines.

I am chef, at present I am employed at a big company like sous chef, I am a Venezuelan and I want to migrate to australia with my wife and children. They might guide me to request the best way of entering in australia, I want to try to realize the negotiations without any agent, since I do not possess the money for the payment of his fees. Thank you very much for the help that they could offer to me.

  20. ianlittle said on May 12, 2009 at 10:16 am

lealgama – You need to read Booklet 6: General Skilled Migration, which is available online from the booklets section of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.

    http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/booklets/booklets.htm

The Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship web site has the Australian Skills Recognition Information (ASRI) page. This page tells you the eligibility requirements for each occupation category.

Go to the ASRI website – http://www.immi.gov.au/asri/

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) website provides more detailed descriptions of typical tasks for your chosen occupation.

    http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/0/5C244FD9D252CFC8CA25697E00184D35?opendocument

The Migration Skills Assessment Handbook provides specific details on assessment requirements.
You need to look at the MODL, SOL and critical liusts (CSL).
Changes are being made to elegibility requirements. Cooks are on the MODL today but not on the CSL. It all could take a while for any application to ne assessed.

i just want to know how much work experience i need to appply for permanent experience

  25. ianlittle said on May 31, 2009 at 6:05 pm

Aman – You can work through the Skilled Migration Internship Program for Accountants (SMIPA) program. This is an initiative of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) to help international students in Accounting to achieve permanent residency and employment in Australia. The SMIPA program offers successful participants the opportunity to gain 10 points towards permanent residency and provides the training and work experience needed to maximise your employment opportunities and work experience in Accounting. Go to the DIAC website for details – http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/professional-year.htm
Also see our FAQ page for further references.

  27. ianlittle said on June 2, 2009 at 9:29 am

James – Read the Australian Computer Society qualifications assessment guidelines and the professional year guidelines. Then talk to a migration agent. For immigration purposes your qualifications will be assessed by the Australian computer Society (ACS). http://www.acs.org.au/index.cfm?action=show&conID=skillassessment

Hi, I just wanted to know how the critical skill list will affect skilled migrants currently not on the list in terms of the number of months or years in approximation that DIAC will take in order to process an application not on the CSL?

  29. ianlittle said on June 10, 2009 at 9:31 pm

Junaid – Migration agents would be able to give you a better idea than I can. See our blog on MODL, CSL, SOL and ENSOL – Australian Migration Lists. It could take some time. It all depends on how quickly the economic situation takes to improve. Do not hold your breath.

  30. Dane said on June 14, 2009 at 9:42 pm

    Hi lan,

I am a Police Officer (Narcotics) with 8 yrs experience. I had a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and a Avanced Diploma in Marketing. I used to work as an engineer before I join the force. My wife is an auditor with 4 years experience. But I guess that my current occupation is not listed in the CSL. What are the chances of me getting a positive assement? Both of us are from Singapore. I hope you could shed light to my situation. Thanks. :)

  31. ianlittle said on June 15, 2009 at 3:10 pm

Shehaad – Mechatronics is seen as an instrumentation type of engineering. Most older instrumentation engineers in Australia have electrical engineering qualifications. I think electrical would be the occupation I would try. It does depend on your specific work experience from which you will draw your CER episodes, the types of subjects your chose to major in and your final year project. If they all are mechanically inclined, say for example on the mechanical side of robotics, you may be better going for mechanical. In the end it is what are your real competencies. they need to all align, your education and your work.

  32. ianlittle said on June 15, 2009 at 5:11 pm

Dane – I hope you would not be hoping to get a job as a mechanical engineer as you will really struggle with eight years old experience. Having no current experience would affect you visa points for general skilled migration. There is nothing I know of in the qualification accreditation that mentions time in relation to work experience. The hardest part may be getting some one who can validate what you did eight years or more ago. You would probably only get accreditation as an engineering technologist. Accountants need IELTS 7.

  33. shehaad said on June 15, 2009 at 6:59 pm

    Hi.

I am working as a service engineer for the local distributor of GE medical systems in Mauritius. Actually i have done a 4year B.Eng(hons) in mechatronics and i have 6 years of working experience.
However, mechatronics is not in the above list. On which field i should apply for, mechanical engineer or electrical engineer?
    Please advise.
    Regards

I completed my BEng (Hons.) Mechanical Engineering Design in 2005 at Kingston University, London with 2:2. I am currently working at an engineering related company as an Engineer, since August 2006.
I am intending of migrating to Australia and I require an assessment done through Engineers Australia. Before proceeding with my application I need to know if I am eligible to assess myself as a Mechanical Engineer (ASCO 2126-11) for migration purpose.

  35. ianlittle said on July 9, 2009 at 7:58 pm

S S – You fit under the Washington Accord. Go to their website and you should be able to see your course. If your course is there – job done for qualifications accreditation.

  36. ianlittle said on July 11, 2009 at 4:11 pm

Jitendra-We cannot advise on visa applications. Talk to a registered migration agent.

  37. Marce said on July 13, 2009 at 10:23 am

hairdressing course can apply for PR its not in critical skill list

  38. ianlittle said on July 13, 2009 at 5:19 pm

Marce – Talk to a registered migration agent about visa options you may have. Frst do some reasearch for yourself. Remember – Free advice may only be worth what you have paid for it, and people who will make money from the advice they give you also may not be giving you the best advice.

To obtain general information on general skilled migration to Australia you need to read Booklet 6: General Skilled Migration, which is available online from the booklets section of the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website.

That piece of free advice is valuable.

For more valuable information go to Project Australia. Low cost, great value. The best investment you will ever make.

  40. ianlittle said on September 24, 2009 at 4:45 pm

Raman – This amount of experience should be enough for you to write the CDR tp demonstrate you have engineering competencies, Until you have your qualifications accredited by Engineers Australia you cannot consider anything else.

  41. vinod said on October 3, 2009 at 8:59 pm

    sir,

i can able to gain Pr to australia. But my wife she is GNM nurse with 6 year experience. But to gain 7.0 in ielts is not possible for her. So what other job opportunity she can able to attain as a nurse. Please explain.

  42. ianlittle said on October 4, 2009 at 1:15 pm

Vinod – All medical occupations have specific occupation language tests. What you are really saying is that she is not prepared to put in the effort to improve her English. She is fortunate to have a husband with good English. You must speak English in the home and read English newspapers and watch English television. If she is not prepared to put in the effort she can migrate as your spouse and wash dishes. Not possible is not acceptable.

What occupation on the Critical Skills List fits your qualifications and experience. Go to our FAQ page and follow all the various links to get a better understanding of what is neede. The steps for any occupation are similar to those for engineers. You need to make the most of living in Australia to improve your English. Don’t waste you money doing a course. Practice.

  49. ianlittle said on October 23, 2009 at 10:08 am

Emanuel – Even working as a freelance contractor you are working for some one. The challenge you may have is obtaining a statement of employment or equivalent. If you look at the Engineers Australia requirements for validation of documents , they allow for declarations witnessed by a range of people they nominate . Go to our FAQ page for the links.

    Hi,

I am planning to do MES/MEM from UTS, Sydney in next session. I have done Electronics and Instrumentation engineering and currently working as a HR/Recruitment consultant. So will i be applicable for PR after doing MES/MEM from UTS.
And it will be easy for me to get PR on this condition?

    Thanks,
    Vipin

  53. ianlittle said on October 26, 2009 at 11:13 pm

Vipin – No, you may be eligible for additional points for study in Australia, but you will have no relevant engineering work. Your qualifications are assessed on your undergraduate qualifications. The only thing your course will do is help you improve your English and do some useful project for a career episode report for your CDR.

    Hello ianlittle,
I am holding B.E. degree and more than 4 years experiance also. I have appeared in IELTS and got overall band score 7. Individually I have scored 7+ in L,R & S but 5.5 in writting. Mine concern is if I apply for CSL, do they consider overall band score or I should have 7.0 score in all components of IELTS. Am I eligible with band scores L-7.5,S-7,R-7 and W-5.5?

    Thanks in advance

Tarun – You will not be assessed by Engineers Australia as you do not have 6.0 or more in all categories, and you will not be eligible for the 10 points in the general skilled mirant visa points test as you do not have more than 7.0 in all categories.
Practice your reading by reading the qualifications assessment and visa guidelines. Obtain the booklets from the links on our FAQ page.
Finally practice your English writing. IKL

Hi, i have done mechanical engineering & also MBA in power management.
Iam working as a consultant in power sector on the basis of my MBA.
Can i get my PR & in how much time.

Sharma – You should be able to be assessed as a mechanical engineer, which is on the Critical Skills List. Without sponsorship the visa application will be a year or so. So the whole process will take at least 18 months. IKL

  60. Tarun Sharma said on December 1, 2009 at 6:07 pm

    Dear IKL,

As i get less than 7band in IELTS writting component, I am wondering if I can appear for only writting individualy or I have to appear all four components.
Secondly if I appear second time, and I get lesser band than my first test, can I go on with previous test result or the latest one will be considered automatically.

    Thanks in advance.

Tarun – You will have to ask the IELTS test people about that. I understand if you do a second test and between the trwo tests you have reached the level you want in the 4 categories across the two tests that is OK. If I did worse in the 2nd test I would not tell anyone about the ist test. IKL

    Hi,
I have finished my MBA from Australian University (U.S.Q), now i want to apply for T.R as i dont have any work experience i can’t apply for P.R. I just want to know where do i get my MBA degree registered, as for Engineers its Engineers Australia, and for Accounting people its CPA, which one is for MBA any help would be really helpful.

    Thanking you
    Prashanth.

  64. ianlittle said on December 8, 2009 at 4:16 pm

Prashanth – As it is a degree from an Australian university it does not need to be accredited by an industry body. Go to the Australian Skills Recognition Information (ASRI) site for details of specific occupations qualifications requirements and associated professional associations. Follow the links from our FAQ page.

Hi, I am Electrical Engineer, since last 1.5 years working in Australia as a Control System Engineer. I applied for 136 PR from offshore 3 years ago with 2125-11 ASCO code from Engineers Australia. That application was rejected because they could not varify my experience from my previous company.
But now as I am in Australia, can I reapply for PR with the same assesment from engineers australia?
Does control System Engineering ocmes under Electrical Engineering and does it comes in CSL?

  66. Amit said on December 18, 2009 at 9:52 pm

Hi, I am Electrical Engineer(Recognize by Engineers Australia- ASCO- 2125-11).
But currently I am working as a Control System Engineer(PLC/SCADA Programming) since 1.5 year in Australia. Can I apply for PR?
Does my job profile comes in CSL?

  67. ianlittle said on December 18, 2009 at 10:57 pm

Amit – Yes you can re-apply. Go to the Engineers Australia website. Ther is a slightly different process when applying from within Australia. You are more likely to fit under the electronic engineering occupation.

i have completed my advance diploma in mechanical engg from melbourne, australia.after that i come back to my home country(india)and worked for two years and now i’m back in australia doing my MBA from melbourne.can i get PR after my MBA.

  69. ianlittle said on December 20, 2009 at 7:58 pm

Vishal – This is no direct link between completing any course and obtaining a visa which entitles you to PR. As an engineering technologist you may be able to get a job and have the employer sponsor you. You should talk to a registered migration agent.

  70. Amit said on December 20, 2009 at 8:33 pm

Thanks for that. but my question is still there. Am I in CSL as Control System Engineer?

  71. ianlittle said on December 20, 2009 at 11:05 pm

Amit – You can call yourself whatever you like. For migration to Australia you will be considered as an electronics engineer. This is on the CSL.

  72. justin said on January 6, 2010 at 6:30 pm

Hi Ian. I had passed the skill assessment where my nominated occupation is Mechatronics Engineer (ASCO 2125-13). I had been working for almost 4 years to date, the first 1.5 years was related to electronics whereas my expertise is then on mechanical and construction in the 2.5 years thereafter. I am hence feeling doubtful when completing the visa application particularly in two main areas:
    1. Under the ‘Occupation in Demand’ section, it states that to have points awarded one should have been employed in the nominated skilled occupation or a closely related skilled occupation for a period totalling at least one (1) year in the four (4) years immediately before making the application. In this case, is my more recent experience on mechanical applicable or is it a necessity that the employment has to be related to electronics? How does one define ‘closely related occupation’ – can a mechatronics (a branch from electronics according to ASCO) engineer working in the mechanical field be considered so?
    2. Referring to the ‘Specific Work Experience’ section, it states that one must have been employed in his nominated occupation, or a closely related occupation listed on the SOL, for at least three (3) of the four (4) years before the day of your application. As you can see from above, I had had two job experience which are less than 3 years respectively but in total exceeds the requirement. Does this fulfil the condition here? Again, the term ‘closely related occupation’ confuses me here.
Appreciate Ian your support and kind advice. Thank you..

  73. ianlittle said on January 7, 2010 at 7:00 am

Justin – As you have been assessed as a mechatronics engineer you use that occupation. Both electronics and mechanical are allied to mechatronics (that is where mechatronics gets its name – mechanical+electronics). Construction of mechanical and electronics portions of projects is also allied as construction engineering is a facet of engineering. You don’t have to have been in a single job. Your total work experience should be OK.
Get a licensed migration agent to review yoiur application.

  74. justin said on January 7, 2010 at 10:26 am

Hi Ian. Thank you so much for your quick reply. You’re right and personally i have little doubt that my work experience fits my professional title. My only concern is that the visa assessor might interpret a mechatronics engineer as an electronics engineer (due to both sharing the same ASCO code 2125-13) instead of mechanical where my work experience would hence be deemed irrelevant or unrelated to my title. Again, thanks Ian for your advice to all the people out there. It really helps..

I have done the bechalor of technology in Mechanical from UET Lahore Pakistan after the diploma of associate engineer in Mechanical. Currently I am working in multinational group last five years as Maintenance Engineer. Please advice me for TRA, should I apply on the basis of Bechelor degree or diploma level because I heard that the bechelor of technology degree is not considered in Aus as engineer. Please help me out

  76. ianlittle said on January 8, 2010 at 1:23 am

Farooq – Let Engineers Australia decide. Apply as a professional engineer. If Engineers Australia do not think you have demonstrated the competencies as an engineer they will give you accreditation at the technologist level without you having to make a second application.

    Ian,

I am Electronic Engineer and have MSc and PhD in Electrical Engineering.
Currently I am developing consulting services as freelancer, by means contracts and receiving payslips from that services.

This documents can be used as evidences of recent work experience?

I really appreciate your comments. Thanks you.

  78. ianlittle said on January 8, 2010 at 11:29 am

Jose – The letters of engagement for the contracts would be the best evidence as these should state that you are being engaged to provide professional engineering services. You can only work with what you have which may be a mixture of letters, of engagement and proposals, and receipts.

  83. shaheen said on January 14, 2010 at 6:52 pm

    Dear Sir,

I am an instrumentation and control engineer with 3 years work experience in control systems. Can you tell me to which category does instrumentation and control system come under and does it come under the CSL??

Also I plan to go for studies to Australia. So I plan to apply student visa first and then apply for PR before leaving to Australia. Is this possible??

  84. ianlittle said on January 14, 2010 at 10:26 pm

Shaheen – An instrumentation and controls engineer will fit under the electronics engineer occupation. This is on the CSL. You should talk to a registered migration agent about visa options. To help you understand their advice go to our FAQ blog page and follow the links to gain as much information for yourself. You should be able to get your existing qualifications assessed and get a job as a professional engineer without further study. I think you wold be better doing that and assessing the Australian job market before heading down the costly path of further education as an international student. Whatever you do your engineering qualifications will be assessed by Engineers Australia on your undergraduate degree, not on any higher qualification.

There is no direct path from study to a PR visa.

Will my case be considered under CSL?. My assessment is in but my experience is in another field.

Hello IAN, i have done electronics engineering a 4 year program & now working with a telecom company a business partner of alcatel-lucent, in pre-sales department designing voice & data networks solutions, i have 1.8 years of experience, i have done several projects, & a final proj with siemens, but my experience has not been very technical in terms of general engineering it has been very vendor specific, although i have been continuing my post grad studies & other networking & telecom trainings, how would IEAust take this?

  88. ianlittle said on January 17, 2010 at 4:00 am

Shabbir – All you need to do is to demonstrate the engineering competencies. The only problem could be if in developing designs you have been limited to developing solutions using only established designs. This could be seen as more an engineering technologist occupation. In your CDR you need to ensure you pick episodes that show the application of your engineering knoedge and skills. Write the three outlines and summary first, befor you start writing in detail.

I have done Bachelor in commerce (B.Com) 2 yr, from Punjab University, Lahore, Pakistan . Moreover, I have done MBA in Finance from Agriculture university Faisalabad, Pakistan. Further more, I have 3 months training in Bank but not worked as a professional banker. Currently, I am teaching IELTS in private institute for about 7 months.
I am willing to migrate Australia but could not figure out my exact Occupation in MODL. I have also done IELTS 6.0 band (7,6,5.5,6) but I am sure I need to improve my english and will have to score 7.0 at least in all modules. Please do also provide me the necessary guide line for assessment. You and your crew is doing excellent job.
    Thanks

  90. ianlittle said on January 17, 2010 at 4:15 am

Shahneela – Australia is looking for skilled migrants. You fail in both occupation amd in level of English to fit the criteria. You are obviously doing a job you are not qualified for. Your are unlikely to be able to qualify for migration to anywhere until you have established a clear occupation and career path for yourself.

  91. Usman Akram said on January 19, 2010 at 4:12 am

    Dear Ian,

Engineers Australia now mentioned on their web site referring to their assessment time that has been extended to 4 months and may be more. Ian when I applied my case to Engineers Australia (as an Electronics Engineer/Professional Engineer) they then mentioned 12-14 weeks, now I am still waiting for my letter. More over, It has been over 14 weeks now. Please advice me should I wait till 16 weeks or is it wise to contact engineers Australia regarding my case.

    Best Regards,
    Usman Akram

  92. ianlittle said on January 19, 2010 at 5:35 am

Usman – 4 months is about 17 weeks for Engineers Australia to process your application – and it may take up to another month for the letter to reach you as it is sent by surface mail. Be patient. Unnecessary calls or emails just slows the system down.

  93. Shabbir said on January 20, 2010 at 9:44 am

Thank you for the clarification Ian, i also wanted to ask if professional affiliation & undergraduate gpa matters as well?

  94. ianlittle said on January 21, 2010 at 8:51 pm

  95. Usman Akam said on January 22, 2010 at 1:14 am

Thanks for clarification. One thing more, Ian I have 2 years and 8 months experience of Telecommunication but now I am working as a instrumentation engineer. further more, this comes under Electronics Engineer definition. I just want your valued suggestion that Immigration department will take the above mentioned experience separately or as one under electronics engineer.
    Thanks

  96. ianlittle said on January 22, 2010 at 1:30 am

  98. ianlittle said on January 25, 2010 at 9:27 am

Melvin – Not enough information as I have no idea of any other qualifications you have. With two years post secondary you would only qualify as a an engineering associate. I don’t think you have much chance as this is not an occupation on the Critical Skills List.

  101. ianlittle said on January 29, 2010 at 1:30 pm

Jrome – It is not important what your job title is. It is what you do that matters. In your CV you must include what your responsibilities (What you do) and achievements are. Engineers Australia have already assessed you are accredited as a professional engineer. Make sure you use relevant activies from the ASCO occupation description when listing your job duties.

My field of engineering is Idustrial & Production. Can I nominate for the occupation of Production or Plant Engineer? I am confused of Plant Engineer. Again or means, it may be production, it may be Plant Engineer.

Production or Plant Engineer is included in Critical list. Whereas Industrial Engineer is not included in Critical list. My current point is 115. Can I apply for Visa under the occupation of Production Engineer without state sponsorship after positive skill assessment?

    Pls advise me.

    Thanks,
    Akbar

  104. ianlittle said on February 2, 2010 at 2:50 am

Akbar – You are qualified as a production engineer so you apply as a production engineer. There are only a limited number of engineering occupations so similar occupations are grouped as a single occupation. An example is civil and structural engineering which is cllaed civil engineering. You need to talk to a registered migration agent about visa matters. Nearly enough points will not be good enough for points for any visa class. If you do notalready have it , get a copy of the Booklet 6 General Skilled Migration from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). You can folow the links from our FAQ blog page.

  105. jrome said on February 2, 2010 at 3:01 pm

    hi ian,

one more question,, So with regards to work reference letter it is ok if my job title there is mechanical designer,as long as my job description is relevant to that of scope of work for mechanical engineer. ?

  106. ianlittle said on February 2, 2010 at 6:26 pm

Jrome -It is the job description that is important. In some countries designers are engineers and in others they are draftsmen. In England mecahanical tradesmen call themselves engineers. This is why in Australia we use the term ‘professional engineer” to remove the doubt..

  107. jrome said on February 7, 2010 at 9:42 pm

    Hi Ian,

This is my duties and resposibilities in my present job..In your opinion is this closely related to mechanical engineer duties and responsibilities…

Liason with clients to obtain new work and ensure that their needs are being met.
    Development of scope’s of work
Production and review of darfting fee estimates
    Management of drafting project budgets
Monitor performance of drafters and progress of work
Providing guidance to other drafters regarding appropriate technical and bahavioural standards.
Ensure that project requirements of cost, quality and time are achieve.

  108. ianlittle said on February 8, 2010 at 7:56 am

jrome – You are applying for skills recognition as a professional engineer. You need to compare these duties with the ASCO definition available from either the Australian Skills Recognition Information (ASRI) or Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) websites. The links to these sites can be found on our FAQ blog page. This could be the job description of a drafting supervisor, not a professional engineer.

I am currently doing my last semester of Masters in IT in Australia. I just came across few pdfs that stated to change in migration rules especially with respect to MODL and CSL list by introducing a new list called the SOL. So far, computing professionals was regarded as an occupation in demand and with MODL having to get washed away this month would be quite hard in applying for PR.
Ian- do u have more info on this one?

    thanks.

  110. ianlittle said on February 8, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I had applied for Subclass 886 on Aug 09. I graduated with a Masters of Business (Accounting) in an Australian University. I had used a General Training IELTS achieving 7s in all components except Writing (6.5). I am wondering if I could use an Academic IELTS done on July 08 (score of 7s in all components) to qualify for the CSL?

  112. ianlittle said on February 18, 2010 at 2:32 pm

Marcus – I would expect so as the academic IELTS test is a higher standard than the general test.

  114. ianlittle said on February 27, 2010 at 11:08 am

San – The visa points depend on the occupation you want to nominate to apply for a visa. An internal auditor is only worth 50 points, whilst other accountants are worth 60 points. You can see all this on the AUSTRALIAN SKILLS RECOGNITION INFORMATION (ASRI) web page. Follow the links from our FAQ blog page.

  116. ianlittle said on March 6, 2010 at 3:49 pm

Eranda – I do not know of any agencies that handle this sort of thing. Many of the larger companies have vacation employment programs. You have to go to the company’s web sites to get details. These are typically advertised around May June each year. These are also advertised through university student employment services. Project Australia provides details.

  134. ianlittle said on May 3, 2010 at 7:41 am

Hi, i ve finished my studies as electrical engg. And wheb i applied for degree assessment, i was recognized as electrical engineering technologist. Does it affect me for my PR! I do ve finished studies as manufacturing engineering honours student by research in Australia. What s the practical difference between electrical professional and technologist engineer.
    Thnx shj

  136. ianlittle said on May 5, 2010 at 9:35 am

Shj – In many companies the difference may not affect the job you get, but it is may affect what you are paid. It could affect eligibility for a visa because one occupation may be on the new SOL and the other excluded. This is not governed by the qualification level, but the need for particular occupations in Australia. A technologist cannot be registered on the National Professional Engineers Register (NPER) or be registered in Queensland (RPEQ). If you have completed further studies after you initial assessment you can request to be re-assessed. The practical difference in the type of work the occupations do is that the professional engineer will tend to do a greater level of planning , analysis and problem solving than an engineering technologist. The engineering technologist will generally work within a framework of developed by professional engineers.

Since my job roll has 50% Engineering & 50% commercial aspect, will I be able to apply under mechanical engineering category?

Saman – Yes. You are assessed on engineering competence, not work experience.

    Hi!
I was just wondering if I could lodge my PR application while being on a tourist visa? My student visa expires on the 31st of Aug, however due to personal reasons I am bound to head back to my home country next month.
And is it necessary to have your CDR approved at the time of lodging or would the receipt number be just sufficient?
    Thanks.

Scachi – You will need to have qualification accreditation successfully completed before applying for a skilled migration visa. It is not enough just to have sent in an application.
